Twisted Hazel - grown by the squirrel

Hi All,

First post!

My Mum has a gorgeous twisted hazel and her local squirrel stored some hazelnuts in another part of the garden. These have grown and are about 5ft tall but about 2ft wide. They have not been touched. 

I would like to eventually take them to my garden, but the aren’t twisted. Will they ever be twisted? As I wouldn’t want them if they are just straight.

    no, they won't be twisted. You would have to propagate by graft or cuttings to get twisted ones. I don't think they ever come true from seed but if they did it would be there from the start

    Apparently all corkscrew hazels are vegetitive clones of the same branch found in a hedge in Gloucestershire in 1863. Interesting to think that all of them around the world are basically one tree.
    Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people

    Oh wow! Such a cool piece of info. I have a plant my mum has handed down to me (can’t remember the name now) that started in my grandmas garden, is in my mum and my aunties garden, and now is in mine ☺️
