Dividing Agapanthus

peteSpeteS Posts: 963
Has anyone divided agapanthus at this time of year. The one I have clearly isn't going to flower this year as there are no buds showing, so I thought I would divide it into smaller pots and reuse the large pot it's in for something else this summer. All the videos I've watched always recommend Spring or Autumn division. Thanks.

There are no buds showing on mine yet, but I still expect it to flower.  I'd give it a bit longer.  It's been a very dry Spring, so I find that everything that flowers is a bit behind by a month or so.

I posed exactly the same question to Broadleigh Nursery from whom I bought my (apparently non flowering this year) agapanthus. They also advised patience but I am not optimistic my three will flower. I asked Broadleigh if it made sense to divide now but they did not respond to that part of my email. I will take KeenonGreen’s advice instead.

I always associate Agapanthus flowering to coincide with Hampton Court Flower Show which isn't until 2nd / 3rd week in July.
I potted some of mine into bigger pots last week, but I'd not split them at this time of year.

Makes a change for me but my blue ones have just popped open.

I bought a large agapanthus for the first time this year. It has three flower heads growing.

Plants , generally , are more "stressed" with being split whilst in growth compared with those done during dormancy

I've over 20 varieties of agapanthus and only my agapanthus snow pixie is in flower, I have a few flower stalks on some others but not many. They will come in the coming months.
