Have got a very overgrown garden- lots of mature trees- any ideas of where to start?
Do you just want to tidy them up/cut them back, or are you thinking of taking them out altogether?
First, think about what you want from the garden: a play space for children and pets? an entertaining space for adults? a wildlife sanctuary? fruit and veg? and how much time, money and effort are you willing and able to put in?
Next, assess the situation: which compass direction does it face, what is the local climate like, what is the soil like: clay, loam, or sandy; acid, neutral or alkaline? All these factors will determine which plants are likely to flourish.
Take some measurements, draw a rough plan, use different colours to mark in plants and features you'd like to keep, those you'd like to remove, and new ones you'd like to put in.
Look at other people's gardens round about you to see which plants do well, and make friends with those whose gardens look well kept! Look on neighbourhood websites to find tradesmen such as tree surgeons and landscapers.
