phlox

good afternoon everyone, i bought 2 phlox plants a couple of months ago, 1 white and 1 pink, the flowers are pretty much gone on them now, my question is will they flower again, or do i need to dead head them, or are they just finished. thanks

Assuming they are perennial phlox paniculata, and not the annual bedding phlox, deadhead them. They may give a second flush, but only in very good conditions. Usually they will go yellow and the leaves fall off and they become dormant for the winter. I tend to leave the stalks on until spring, when they start growing, and then cut the old stalks down to the ground. That way I don't forget where they are and put the fork through them.
thanks fidgetbones, i bought them as perennials, so i hope they are
they will be double the spread next year when they come up.
thanks for the advise, i thought i should deadhead them, the seed heads underneath the flowers remind of geraniums, hope that doesnt sound silly
Actually you should leave the deadheads on and try growing some from seed.I have 34 different named colours in my garden and for the past three years I have grown some from seed. The resultant plants can be like some of the parents, but I also get some completely different colours and some of them are gorgeous.I keep the young plants in pots until they flower and then plant the really good ones and sell the rest. You also get the thrill of naming your new colours yourself.
