hawthorn tree dying?

hi

I bought a hawthorn tree about a month ago - CRATAEGUS CRIMSON CLOUD.

it is about 10ft high and came in a bag (had been grown in a pot at a garden centre).

we planted with stakes as per the instructions and kept it watered and it was growing successfully and had flowered but one month in the leaves have started to wilt and more importantly the berries are turning black.

it looked perfect just a few days back..

do you know what the problem might be please?

If you planted it well and kept it watered, I think you would be justified in going back to the seller with photos. They should be able to offer advice, and there should be some sort of guarantee if it fails so soon despite proper care. It could be weather-related (hot, then cold, and some windy days thrown in for good measure) but that's not your fault.

Hello @mrkfm01 and welcome to the forum. 😊

Sorry to hear about your tree.

When you say it was well watered ... how much water and how often?

It takes a lot of water to produce blossom, leaves and berries ... and your tree’s roots will not have got into the surrounding soil yet.   I would give it at least two buckets of water every other day ... probably three buckets when we had that hot spell.

If you think it might be due to lack of water try giving it plenty now ... with any luck it’s not too late. 🤞

By the way, some varieties of hawthorn have black rather than red berries, so this may be nothing to worry about. 😊

I've been watering from a hose directly in to the base of the plant.

I'll be optimistic and keep it up :)
