Climbers for planters

Hello, with a small courtyard garden I am limited to growing in planters and am struggling to get any climbing plants to grow vigorously to provide some height/cover. Are there any recommendations for a climbing plant that would climb well when planted in a large pot/planter against a West facing wall? Thx

    Clematis every time.
Tall grasses might work but it all depends on the size of the pots.
45cm cube is the minimum for clematis and any climber that will be permanent

If you provide at least a 50cm depth you could try training an Abelia Floribunda. It's a semi evergreen wall shrub that has a long flowering season in the summer. The flowers contrast well against the dark green glossy leaves.

How much height are you looking for and how quickly?

Quickest thing we had in a planter was a Jasmine officiniale.  It was in a big trough in our West facing garden.  It grew metres per year, a bit of a beast, and we trained it up the house wall.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I would really like a plant to scramble to as much as 4 metres or more! to cover a trellis on top of a wall. I will be using a 55cm square planter.

I think I posted this in another thread. I have a few passiflora, pretty much ever green, hardy, and grown over 20 feet high on a west facing wall, all in a 30cm diameter pot. The trick is to train it in repeated S shapes.

We lost our passion flower last year - got slugged every time it raised it's head! That mother could cover our garage in a month, I can't believe it got nobbled

I love them, great plants and you don't see them that often. And yes, take your eye off one for more than 30 seconds and it'll cover your house and apply for a passport to emigrate.
