How can I eradicate houttynia cordata?

Long ago there was a houttynia chameleon. Now houttynia cordata has taken over 2 very separate large beds, in one of which it is inter-twined with a large acer and other large valuable shrubs. We have spent past summers going down a foot into the soil to try and remove every vestige of root.
Help!! It doesnt respond to weedkiller even if I can protect the other plants.
I am removing every other moveable plant, but am probably transferring some bits of houttynia root as well.
