Dutch Iris came up blind

Hi folks
I planted some Dutch Iris (Valentine and Lion King) in pots last year, in a very gritty mix. They came up happily but never flowered. They've dried out now, and I've taken them out for storage. The skin on the bulbs is now very loose, as in there are air gaps between bulb and skin, but no rot or fungal growth or anything like that. I can't remember if they were like this when I bought them, and have not planted them before so have no experience do draw on!
So my questions are, any ideas why they didn't flower, and are they worth storing for replanting in autumn?
