Change in appearance of plant

I bought a sambucus nigra black lace plant, after my husband pruned it right back after a couple of years the leaves and the flower grew back a different colour. The most puzzling thing of all was the change in the shape of the leaves, they are no longer delicate lacy leaves.

hiya and welcome to the forum.
It might have been a grafted plant? If he's cut below the graft, it'll just be the rootstock growing.
I've never heard of them being grafted before though.

Could you show a photo of the plant?

Do the leaves become more divided as they mature? Maybe he hacked it back so far, it's taking a while to recover. Not sure that would happen if it's been two years though.
    I didn't think they were grafted either @Hostafan1 :/

Have you got any pix @ritamoss1703? That may shed some light on the problem  :)

I'm wondering if it could be a self-seeded one ... the first having not responded well to the pruning and died off.

@Fairygirl no, the new leaves are divided, they don't mature and divide
