I've got a Hydrangea paniculata Sundae Fraise i want to plant in half a whisky barrel, whats the best substrate for the plant to thrive in.

    John Innes no.3 is purpose made for long term shrub planting. A homebrew mix of good garden soil and multipurpose compost with some grit might be good enough though.
