Anemone De Caen - no sign of growth

Planted anemone de Caen bulbs in pots in the cellar back in the middle of April and in retrospect after a bit of reading, I probable planted them completely wrong. Didn't soak the bulbs, can't remember which way up they were put into the earth etc. All the basic beginners mistakes in other words! So they are in small pots, but I can't see signs of life. Should I gently try to dig around them and look for signs of life? Any chance of saving them? I'm worried they have rotted. The pots have been outside for most of May as it has been mild here (and even hot now).

I'd tip one out and have a look.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

They would usually be finished flowering by now if they were outdoors, but as you didn't have them outside until this month,  I doubt they're viable, unless they were already showing signs of growth.
It's unlikely they're alive, but no harm in doing as @B3 suggests.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

They were completely rotten. There was nothing but earth in the pots. Will try again next year and follow the instructions more closely!
