FANTAIL PLUM/SWEET CHERRY TREES PRUNING
Hello there,
My 2 trees are about 5 years old, medium root stock ( I believe). I have followed RHS
advice on pruning, but I believe that I have not executed them correctly.
In all these years I had reached a pathetic max of 10 cherries and 5 plums per year.
Thinking to have pruned to harshly, last year I decided to leave most of the main branches untouched and un-trained as you can see from the picture to see if I could improve my yield...failed again!
I believe I can now prune in June or after fruiting.
Could you advise what % of pruning I can carry out? Should I remove all the vertical 3/5 year old main branches and train then shoots?
What else should I do to succeed?
Many thanks for your help
Alberto
