Topping off a conifer

The tree in the centre of this photo is a dwarf conifer my wife brought home about 10 years ago. The ground level at the base of the trunk is about 1.5m below the decking  :| It does serve as a very effective wind break though so it can stay for now. I'd like to stop it growing much higher though but I'm worried it will look terrible if I just chop the top off. Any tips to do tame this monster before it gets taller than the house?

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
