Types of plant?

Hi all
Can anyone tell me what plant this is and how to maintain it throughout the seasons. Should I be cutting this back or is it a plant that can just be left alone?
Thanks.

Yes, not a long-lived plant. Flowers its socks off for a few years then tends to get woody/leggy and at that stage can fail to regrow after pruning. But such a good long flowering season that it's well worth taking cuttings every couple of years to keep it going.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Thanks for your help everyone. It has been in for 2 years now and noticed it has started getting patchy and feels very brittle.
    Thanks again.
