Help save my dying yucca

I have been given a yucca plant from a family friend, it was in very bad condition so i have trimmed a lot of the dead/dying leaves off. It needs repotting but unsure as to what soil to use? The soil is very dry and in fact split in half probably from the roots. Parts if the leaves remaining are browning and curling. Desperately trying to save this plant to add it to my collection but unsure as to how. Please help.

Poor abused thing! It's pretty hard to kill a yucca tbh. If it's really tatty then you might wanna try chopping the growing branches off, replanting those and let the original trunk sprout, there's loads of youtube vids etc.
You can easily get overrun with yuccas
  • Hello! Do not fear! First things first I would 100% suggest to repot it, as it maybe tired and not getting enough goodness from an exhausted soil. I would try to order someJohn Innes potting soil and mix it with 1 part sand and also a few extra pebbles to improve the drainage as they do like an open free draining soil for sure.
Now that we are in the growing season I would also suggest that it needs a good feed, repot or not repot, a good seaweed based feed will help him out for sure. They do like bright light and can stand direct light for a spell also.
**But remember that in between waterings it must fully dry out before another dousing**
if you manage all of this you find that new growth will come  bustling through in no time at all and you can then remove the old browning parts :)

Perfect thank you!! Going to buy the soil online after work (working from home) and some pebbles for the bottom of the pot. Just hoping he bounces back because I can imagine him to look great. It has like tiny new leaves forming but don't think they will continue to grow until he is happy in his pot. I'll have to double check for root rot i think incase he was overwatered previously. Will keep you updated! Thanks
  • Indeed @philippa smith2 it may well be a dracenta - can you send more pictures @zaralebrocq? Don’t worry though as dracenta, like Yucca, are pretty tough blighters 😋
  • I will send more pics in the morning of it, does look like a dracenta now I'm looking at pics of those...but either way seems roughly the same care is needed. Ordering the soil tomorrow for it none the less. Thank you!

To be told to buy John Innes potting soil will cause confusion.

To explain ...John Innes is not a brand, it is a series of formulae developed for different purposes. These formulae are used by various brands to create their compost mixes.

    They are known as
    John Innes seed compost
    John Innes No’s. 1,2 & 3 and Ericaceous.
