The old country name is ‘May’ ... and the flowers are ‘May blossom’ ... hence the old saying ‘Ne’er cast a clout ‘til May be out’ ... (don’t take off your thicker winter clothes until the May blossom has opened as it’s only then that warmer temperatures are reliably here).
Its a really useful hedging plant and is found all over the English countryside as it was commonly used to provide a stock-proof hedge ... it’s sometimes known as ‘Quickthorn’.

Thank you guys. It is a beautiful tree and the flowers are divine. And despite being quite delicate the flowers tend to last a fair bit as a cut flower.
I assume the one in the picture above is the comon hawthorn crataegus monogyna?
