I’m not sure it is a Penstemon.

Have you planted a Red Ridinghood Penstemon?

No @AnniD . I have a an intermittent war with phygellius. We recognise each other😠

Looks like I need to wait a bit longer.
It's doing ridiculously well in dry  dappled shade. Slugs ignore it in a penstemonly way. plant is a bit bigger than the photo. It looks like a simple variety of whatever it is

Your luck might be not to have it! The runners, when it's happy, are a total pita. @AnniD😊

So have you ever planted any Red Riding hood Penstemons, if you haven’t, it wouldn’t just appear.

I planted it. I bought it. I've had a thing for penstemon. I will check red riding hood.😊 @Lyn

That's  the one. Thank you @ Lyn. In my own  rickety defence, it does look a bit different to the others I have, but I think it's going yo be my favourite. . Simple and more subtle

That’s good, it is a bit different to the usual ones. You can take some cuttings later.

I certainly will.  it seems to thrive on  rock hard clay/ partial shade.  Thanks for solving the mystery @Lyn
