Acer Novice Advice

Hey Everyone – I recently purchased a Palmatum Atropurpurem Acer and think it might have experience some damage due to wind, as seen on one side of the plant? I have moved the play to a more sheltered location and looking for any advice to improve its condition / prevent further damage as I am a gardening novice! It has been planted with general compost and I have not given it any fertiliser. I have located it in the morning sun but would shade be more benefical? Thanks ::smile

If it's staying in a pot, it'll need more than compost. It needs a soil based medium  :)
Morning sun is the most damaging for it, so if you can get it into a shadier spot it should be fine. Wind can be more of a problem than anything for young foliage, but it looks fine apart from that.

The dead stuff will drop off, so don't worry about that.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • thanks for your help - Acer now has new growth :)

    Oh - that's good @emma.jane.haggart. Hopefully it'll be fine now  :)
Sharp wind and a lot of very hot sun are the main enemies for them, so if you have it in a better site, that will help enormously. Later sun is fine, but the harsh morning/midday stuff isn't so good.

  • yes I have moved the Acer to a more sheltered spot which only gets late afternoon sun, making all the difference!
