Self seeded cherry trees

I have 3 self seeded cherry tree saplings, I would like to move them as they are not in a good place for them to thrive, what would your recommendations be, pot for a couple of years while they establish or straight into the ground, I have light sandy soil and a south facing garden

I'd say enjoy them in a pot for a few years and don't plant them in the ground. Cherries can be horrible in suburban gardens...mind you if you have a few acres you can take a chance. But in more regular plots  better off picking a grafted tree with a known rootstock, it's a recipe for a disaster in the future to grow a self seeder.

  • thanks Amancalledgeorge, could you explain why they can be horrible and a disaster ?
