Dark laurel leaves

Why has my 15 yr old laurel grown these dark broad, leaves on one branch only. They came out 3-4 weeks earlier than the rest. The bright red/pink is the normal Colour.

    Thank goodness it's not a laurel...sick of seeing those ugly plants. I wonder if this new look of leaves, as the rest of the plant seems to be a dissectum variety must be a sucker from below the graft. Can you show is a frontal shot of the whole acer to be certain?

    It's a maple, @Fudgeflaps - I'm sure you know that, we all have a brain freeze from time to time...  the branch with big leaves needs to be removed or it will take over from the pretty pink.  Is the whole branch affected?  If so, does the branch start from low down on the plant, below the point where the graft can be seen?  Often these maple varieties are grafted onto a different rootstock and that could be what is growing.

    Yes, of course it’s a maple; senior moment! The plant is grown as a standard and the graft is at the bottom of the stem so this is definitely above the graft. It is only one branch, however this branch is now growing normal/pink leaves lower down towards the main stem.
