Damage to clematis leaves - pests or.....

I've got some strange damage on a couple of my little clem plants.
I'm suspicious of the fact that I bought these two together and they're the only ones affected out of about a dozen similarly-sized plants, so I'm wondering if it's some sort of splash damage or similar. Please could someone advise?
I've put them in lockdown and made them practice social isolation for the moment  :D

Gosh, don't posts get buried quick this time of year! Bumped from page 6. Any ideas please?

Looks like damage from sap-sucking insects, such as thrips, aphids or scale insects.  Noticed this when zooming-in to your photo but can't see clearly - could this be the culprit?  The white damaged area above is suspiciously similarly shaped..

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
