Flowering Cherry producing pods for the first time in 35 years??

I have a flowering cherry tree in my garden and for the first time in 35 years it is producing odd shaped pods along side the normal cherries.  I have a feeling these might be misshaped cherries, any ideas anyone

Unfortunately, those are not pods but malformed fruits and are caused by a disease called 'Pocket plum'.  See here:
I suspect your tree may actually be a cherry plum.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
