I have a viburnum woodii (think that’s right) and growing out the side is another plant. No idea what it is - I can only assume the viburnum was grafted onto it and it has now started growing. Pics to follow.

follow the shoots back to the base and you'll see which are those you want, and which are coming up from the rootstock. Remove those coming from the rootstock or they will take over

No idea what the cistus has to do with anything though.

Where does cistus come into this?????

Be very careful which one you cut back   ....Viburnum burkwoodii has shiny evergreen leaves.

Thank you. I’m sure I can see which one is the invader! I’ll cut it off tomorrow. Does it have to be right at the base of where it’s growing?

Yes as near the ground or even below soil level.
    Have added pics above.

Thank you! Love the viburnum - it smells wonderful when it flowers. It still has spent flowerheads on it and I can see it has glossy leaves compared to the rootstock which has pretty dull green leaves. They are both distinctive so I’m sure I won’t make a mistake. Thanks very much for your help. :)
