Planting Dahlias out

MarsheeeMarsheee Posts: 15
Hi All,
First time growing Dahlias to plant this year.

I started them off in pots a few months ago indoors next to the window, managed to rot 6 out of 10, I think I over watered them 😕, live and learn!
The remaining survivors seem to be doing ok.

So to avoid killing off the survivors, my question is...

Is it safe to plant them out in the ground now? Can’t see a frost in sight but who knows in this country!?

Also, I’ve been putting them out in the day in the pots & bringing them in at night, is that enough to prepare them for outdoor temperatures or do I need to leave them in pots over night outdoors first before putting in the ground?

Thanks

    Hi
depends where abouts you are in the country ,here in the north east I will wait until the last week  of May same as you out during decent days ,left them out last night because 10c but real feel Sunday Monday here - 3  forecast would knock them back.

I've still got mine in the pots and am going to wait a while. There may be a cold snap over the weekend but my bigger concern is slugs and snails eating the new and small growth.  I'm quite new to dahlias so see what the experienced have to say.

Don’t rush to plant them out - slugs and frost can cause havoc. Let them get quite big in their pots and you can also put your pots where you plan to plant them in the meantime. Mine are all still in the greenhouse but I leave it open at night. As another mentioned, I’d wait till the end of next week as there’s a potential frost coming.

Brill thanks All! Sound advice! Fingers crossed I don’t kill them off! 🤞🏻🤞🏻.
We’re in the South West so slightly warmer but I won’t rush to plant out until end of May in that case.
    Thank you
