What is this tree/shrub, and what to plant next to it?

My step daughter has just moved house and wondering what to plant to 'mask' this gap in the wall- they've taken a shrub out.  The site is North West facing, loamy soil and does get some sun.  Can anyone identify the lanky tree (photo of leaf attached), and would it benefit from 'renovation' pruning?

It may be a young Laburnum tree. If you need to prune them, maybe remove the lower leaves to create a more tree-like shape. They should be pruned in mid to late summer. Pruning in spring and early summer may cause them to bleed.

I think the gap there is too small for a shrub. If you dig a deeper border, maybe something like Choisya x Dewitteana 'Aztec Pearl' can look nice there.
