LILIUM BULBS

I have 3 lilium each of Mount Cook, Stargazer, Mount Everest & Venezuala bulbs. How deep do I plant them and how tall do they grow? I may be limited in where I can put them if they are very tall. Thanks.

Hello Mike, did the lily bulbs have labels on them? They should give the right information for each type. Sorry, not that familiar with lilies.

  • Thanks Lizzie. They were a free gift in a package of plants etc I bought on line from a well known garden supplier. No instructions were given.  Will wait and see what else transpires here.

No experience of the others but I grow Stargazer and several other tall lillies and planted them all 8" (20cm) deep.  Stargazer will get to about 3-4ft (1 - 1.2m) tall or so.

Stargazers are tall if I remember correctly, about 3 feet. I planted mine in large pots with about 5 inches of compost over them, sorry if you measure in new money.
I'd search on line for each variety e.g. Lilium Stargazer, that will bring up lots of sites which will give you detailed info.
  • Thanks Bob, that gives me an idea of where I can put them, or at least some of them! Thanks also for info on the depth, I would not have thought to put them so deep. :)

The usual advice is around three times the depth of the bulb @mike317entry, so a 2 inch bulb will need about 4 inches of soil over it.
Ideally, you would plant them even deeper :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
