Dead Wasps i soil

I planted a couple of raspberry canes into a large container a few months ago and they have just began to bud up in the last week or so. In the past week however the soil in the container has been sourrounded by wasps landing on the soil and some of them seem to have died off on the surface.Its still attracting them though and there seems to be about half a dozen buzzing around the container at any given time i'm out in the garden.Can anyone tell me whats going on as I have young children and don't want them getting stung if at all possible. Thanks.
