Any know what causes this?

I have these holes in mounds of soil does anyone know what it is? Is it red ants? There's so many of them and some are huge!!
Thanks in advance

Looks like ant hills but the hole is rather big. Have you seen ants there?
  • Thanks for your reply. No I've only just noticed them, they are hidden behind our water butt, we have a lot of red ants in the lawn which I know leave little mounds so wandered if it was them? We are going to try and tackle them this year (only moved in last year) no idea how yet so any tips welcome! 🤣

If its damp there most of the time then it might not be ants after all, they like it dry and avoid wet places usually.
  • Some species of bee (eg miner bees) burrow into the earth...possible?
