Greengage bud problem

I have a four year old greengage, it's about 3m tall so far. This year lots of blossom on all the branches, except one. The blossom has converted to tiny fruits and leaves are growing nicely on all the branches, except one.
So one branch started to have blossom, but that seemed to wither and fail. Leaf buds began to appear but the new leaves soon went a kinda mouldy, brown colour and died. Lot's of buds all up this one branch, but no leaves and no fruit.
I don't understand what is happening.
