Spanish Blade

My Spanish Blade is around 7 years old and has never had a problem in the years I have had her.....

However this year the new centre stems dying, maybe have been caused by the excessive rain we have had...

Do I leave these to totally dry out and then take them out or should I cut them as low I can get into the crown?  I am nervous of doing more damage to what is overall a healthy plant
