Flowering currant gone beserk

My flowering currant seems to
have doubled in size over the past couple of weeks!! Is now c3m high and almost the same across. What is my best bet for getting it under control - cut back to the size I want it to be, or go more drastic to ‘reset’?

It is up to you on how tall you want it to grow. It sounds like a mature shrub already, so you could prune down a quarter of the bush back to base, and shorten the rest of the branches to how much you want, usually a quarter of the current height. This way, you are creating a more naturalistic look that helps to rejuvenate the shrub and allow new branches to form every year. Do this after flowering and repeat every year.

I removed (a yellow flowered) one completely (or so I thought) but there are now 5 or 6 new ones in a circle around the old position so I can only assume they came from severed roots left in the ground.  Previously, I have cut it back to a few inches high and it came back strongly, growing about 2-3ft per year.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
