I think my tree is dying

Can anyone help me please? My Christmas tree which ive had about 3 years and was doing really well up until about a month or so ago, has started to go brown and the needles are dropping off. I first noticed a sticky residue on it before it seemed to go all brittle. I really don't know what to do with it.

It's not very happy is it?  Does it get watered regularly?  Can you see any aphids on it?

Hi, yes and no mainly through the summer when thr ground gets too dry but it's always been really quite happy and healthy until recently. I've had a look but can't see anything on it, just the sticky what I can only assume is sap.
