Clematis recommendations

I would really like a climbing clematis that flowers in the summer with white flowers and is suitable for a shady spot. I'll also be planting in a pot so can anyone advise if there is one?? If not, I'm happy with non-white flowers.

Try with Raymond Evison Clematis website - he's a world renowned breeder of clematis, if you search on white flowers, summer flowering, container and shady spot, it should hopefully bring you up a list. Other than that, the Boulevard range of clematis have been specially bred to flower prolifically in a pot, I don't know if there is a white one though. There's also Hawthornes Nursery who are clematis specialists, the owner Richard Hodson is very knowledgeable and good on advising (www.hawthornes-nursery.co.uk)

    Hi

Miss Bateman is a good grower with off white summer flowers. Grows to a height of 2m and ideal for a container. Doesn’t mind a bit of part shade particularly to the base of the plant

Check out Taylor's and Thorncroft - both specialists - too.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you for all of your replies and so quickly!!  You have been an enormous help to the novice gardener and the websites you recommended were perfect. Taylors had an amazing range of options and I've chosen 'Clematis Forever Friends'

I've just ordered that this morning @Simoneealing, along with two others  :)
My girls got me vouchers for Christmas, and I'd been compiling a small [ehmmm ;) ] list of the ones I wanted for various places. It was one of several which will suit an area in a  border which is generally shady.

We can compare notes later  :D

  • Hey Fairygirl, that's a coincidence!!
I never realised there were so many varieties of clematis, no wonder I was confused. I was just planning one clematis to see how I get on with taking care of it and then I found a really beautiful variety that I thought I could put elsewhere (Viticella Clematis Mary Rose) - This might become a habit/hobby....

They're very easy to get hooked on @Simoneealing ;)

I still have several on the list, but they're out of stock of some, and there's one or two I want which they don't stock, so I'll get them elsewhere.
I was glad to see they were really busy with orders though - great company.  :)

You can't have it @WillDB - we saw it first.... :D

It was a toss up between that one and John Huxtable for the particular spot I have.
