Acer tree drying from the top

My Acer tree started to dry from the top in the spring (or could be during winter). It was perfectly fine in the autumn before all the leaves dropped out. What should I do?

If it was mine, I'd lightly scrape the bark on the "dead" bits. If they're green that part is still alive and may regrow. If brown under the bark I'd reckon it was dead and I'd prune it out. Sadly I've no expertise on Acer diseases or problems. Mine occasionally get nipped and die on the ends following a blast from cold winds in the Spring.
