Sunday ID help #2

This one looks pretty sad (and is intertwined with that blasted sedge). Lots of the wood looks ‘dead’ but some little purple flowers are appearing on some parts.  Any idea what it is and what I should do with it?

Try and remove the sedge using a hand fork if necessary.

As for ID, wait and see what those buds become - foliage or flowers - and then cut out all the stems that produce none.

Thank you! The sedge is a beast - literally feels like concrete at the base even with a full sized spade / fork (and I’m pretty strong)! I’ll wait until the weather brings more wet weather and I’ll get it eventually!

I'll take a guess at one of the purple-leaved berberis varieties. The wood of my "Rose glow" looks very similar.

  • Could be a purple-leafed Physocarpus.
Can you post another photo when growth is a bit easier to I.D. please.
