Identifying a plant and how to stop it getting into lawn

Hi

Can anyone advise what plant this is and how I can get rid of it? It ends up growing like a reed and binds together really tight. It has started growing into the lawn and at the moment I try to pull it out by hand but sometimes do not get the whole root out.

Thanks

It looks a bit like Carex Pendula which I have found to be a thug that seeds freely.  As soon as I find a seedling, I dig it out, having previously found, like you, that it has a habit of being very difficult to eradicate.
I think that you just have to be persistent, digging it out as soon as you see it, before it gets a hold.  And the clump that you have on the edge of your lawn may need to be dug out all around, so that you can  then deal with any small plants that pop up.
I had it in a previous garden, and foolishly encouraged it at first.  It wasn't easy to bring under control!
