Compost? Top soil?

Hi,
I realise this will be a very simple question to everyone but I am an absolute novice at this.
I am currently giving my garden a total overhaul (first garden) and I am looking to add some large pots and planters to my decking area but what do I fill them with? Compost or top soil?

Been told different things by plenty of people who are no experts. Please could you help. Compost, top soil or a mixture of both?

Thank you

Depends what you are planting to some extent, but you won't go far wrong with 75% topsoil mixed with 25% well-rotted farmyard manure (the bagged stuff in garden centres is ideal.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Ok thanks. I know in the longer planters I'm planting something along the lines of dwarf conifers and then just general selection of flowers from the local garden centre in others. As I say, no expert. Thank you.

Just a caution  - conifers of any kind won't be happy for very long in planters.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
