Can't identify pest or disease on pear tree- any ideas?

Hi,

I've had a recurring problem on a conference pear tree. The tree is probably around 5 years old A lot of holes with black edges start appearing in the leaves around blossom time, and there are lots of little black "bits" on the leaves. It tends to get worse over a few weeks, and any fruitlets that form eventually fall off.

Could anyone help identify what the possible cause may be? I've tried searching for answers online for countless hours but to no avail.

Many Thanks,

Phil.

@philmitchell. Welcome to the forum. :)  I am just bumping up your post in the hope that someone can help you with your query.
  • Good morning Fran. Thank you very much. It's much appreciated.
I have been out this morning and scoured the tree to find the following caterpillars on the tree, which i am guessing are the culprits. Does anyone know what type they?

    Thanks in advance,

    Phil

@philmitchell  Third time lucky! Don't like to see new posters without a response.  :)

  • Thank you once again Fran! Maybe it's a difficult one? I will keep Googling away in the meantime.

I’ve seen similar caterpillar droppings/frass around apple blossom, but never in sufficient quantities to suggest any real damage.
