Dahlia cuttings - now or later?

Hi you lovely lot 
one of my dahlia tubers has really taken off, with something like 15 separate shoots. I know I need to thin it out down to around 5, but I want to try and take some cuttings too.
one of my dahlia tubers has really taken off, with something like 15 separate shoots. I know I need to thin it out down to around 5, but I want to try and take some cuttings too.
Do I wait for it to get a little bigger or start thinning out sooner and hope for the best with smaller cuttings?
