Novice Turfing Advice

Hi all, as a first time turfer I need a bit of advice on what to do with the large roots that come from a tree next to the area to be turfed. The roots are quite thick as it is a well established tree and ideally I want the tree to live. There are also lots of small, thinner roots that go across this are also. There was turf that has been removed and it did ok, only removed to level out and expand the turfed area.

Any advice welcome and appreciated as want to do a decent job...

Was that area previously under "membrane" and gravel?
My fear is that those roots will sucker through the turf.

No, no membrane there was turf on top.

    I'm pretty sure it's a Rowan tree
