    I would take cuttings, penstemons do that very well, quicker than seeds and the same as the parent plant.

    Cuttings can be done now. I often cut them back hard at this time of year and use what I've just off for cuttings.

    in pots for me, about half a dozen round the edge of a 4" pot.

    I usually just use mpc. You can put a plastic bag over them if you want, but I find them pretty easy, although I could never get them to root in water which others have said is what they do.
