Help! Best way to grow grass in shade under willow tree and with poor quality soil?

Hi all!
Hoping for some tips on how best to grow grass in the shade and in an area of poor soil. We have a willow tree at the back of the garden and the grass has died and become patchy underneath. The ground is muddy and doesn't seem good quality for grass growing, see pictures! If we put down a layer of leaves and topsoil might we be able to encourage grass seeds to grow? We are amateurs so any advice at all would be appreciated!
Thanks :)
Hannah

I think you're on a hiding to nothing.
Willows suck up a lot of water, which leaves very little for the grass. They also cast a lot of shade. I'm afraid both things are necessary for grass to thrive.
You may have to remove the willow if you want grass.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
