I have never used Growmore.  For general feeding I use pelleted chicken manure or a mix of cow horse and chicken pellets which are scattered by the handful to the square metre.   For specific feeding I use liquid tomato feed for flowering and fruiting plants tho i'm working on building up a patch of comfrey to make my own.   Leafy plants get a nettle feed as it's high in nitrogen.

On the whole, I find it's best to build up soil fertility and structure by using mulches such as well rotted garden compost tho for roses and clematis I like to use horse manure.

  • If you're growing veg and fruit in the ground you're better off using organic based fertiliser such as Fish Blood and Bone or Q4 (many other varieties available) Growmore is a product of the chemical industry which is not great from a sustainability point of view. Non organic fertilisers work well in containers where you can't depend on the soil fertility to be improved by adding manure etc and depend on the microorganisms to help out.

Here's a fascinating blog post on Grownmore's wartime beginnings: https://worldwarzoogardener1939.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/national-growmore-fertiliser-a-brief-history/

I don't use BFB or chicken pellets because the local foxes and badgers love them and will dig their way through the area to snaffle them up. My dog likes them, too. Some people haven't had this problem, perhaps urban foxes have more choice, but Growmore isn't as bad as you might think. Life is all chemicals, to be honest.
  • Thanks for advice everyone.

    Hi Sarah
We've been using Gro-All plant food for a number of years now and had excellent healthy yields, so recommend very highly. This is a picture of last years tomatoes.

I have a granular organic feed that contains chicken manure- a compromise. Can't remember the name.
