Best fertilizer

I moved into a house at the back end of last year and the garden was just grass, I've started digging out borders and adding plants but I would like to get some nutrients in the ground. What's the best thing to use? A layer of fresh compost, fish blood and bone or other types of fertilizer?

Thank you

The best would be well-rotted manure in my opinion.  However, given the current situation that might be difficult to get hold of, in which case home-made compost with the addition of FBB would be next best.  If your soil is easy to work then just FBB would be good.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Agree totally with @BobTheGardener

If you're near stables, and can get there on foot with a wheelbarrow, that's another option for the manure  ;)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Thank you for the replies.
If I got FBB any tips on mixing it in as I have Herbaceous plants in there so I don't want to end up digging into them
