Identify plant please

KiliKili Posts: 1,022
Hi all, can you identify the plant in the images below please?

Its been in my greenhouse all winter sheltering . Its getting old now and I don't know what it is as it was given to me about 5 years ago. I would like to take cuttings or propagate from it some how but don't know how. so any thoughts on how to do that also would be appreciated.

Many Thanks
Kili

Hello Kili - it is a Pieris. Take cuttings from non-flowering shoots and remove all but the top leaves. Poke the cuttings down into damp compost in pots and keep them moist.
p.s. I should have said that July/August is the time to take these cuttings

Thanks Ladybird, I have a heated propagator on the go at the moment would it be a good idea to stick some cuttings in there or would 22 degrees be to hot?

That would be too warm Kili.

A question Kili. Do you keep your Pieris indoors all the time? It would be far happier in the garden as Pieris are very hardy.

    Hi, Ladybird. No I don't.
I keep it in the greenhouse over winter only, as we have had such a mild winter, it seems to be flowering like its the middle of summer. I'm a lot further south than most ( Jersey) so it will be going out in the garden in a weeks time after hardening off over that period.

Kili, my Pieris lives outside in the garden all year around and I am in the North West of England. Its planted in the ground and not in a pot. I think where you are (lucky thing!) you could easily do similar with yours. There is no need for it to be brought inside at all and think how much space that will give you in your greenhouse for other treasures.

Aye, your right Ladybird but, I don't bother trying to overwinter much in the greenhouse these days as the mildew just seems to destroy everything and I cant afford to heat it so, I just stick mostly my larger potted plants in there as it gives them that little push to get going earlier so I can enjoy them a bit longer.

I've even had my potted Acer in there and its in full leaf now although previous years I've left it outside with the Pieris.

Thanks for all your help be careful out there.
