Fungus on Acer

Does anyone know what this fungus is and how to get rid of it. It is growing on a 15 year old Acer which is about 8-10ft high. After a while the branch affected by the fungus dies back.

First, it’s not a fungus. It’s a lichen. Or rather, two different lichens.
Second, don’t get rid of it. It’s a sign that the air in your part of the world is fresh and unpolluted. It’s just using the branch as a perch.
Something else is making the shoots die back.

Those are two types of lichen and are harmless. Their presence is an indicator of good air quality. You might find them on here:
