Pollinator for jonagold

Just bought a jonagold apple tree which the information label stated was self pollinating! Come home to research and find it most certainly isnt.  Will a crab apple 'golden hornet's pollinate it. Also have Morello cherry

  • This website claims to have a calculator to allow people find suitable pollinators for the apple variety they have. Just reading about it briefly and it sounds like golden hornet is in a different pollinator group so might not be an ideal partner for the jonagold.

Orange Pippin’s is an excellent website.

Here they point out that Jonagold is one of those irritating triploids that generally needs two different varieties to help it out.  They go on to list them...

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
  • I would be interested to know the supplier’s name on the label which gave such misinformation.

De Rees sent me a £10 voucher and 4 packets of seeds and said it was a printing error which has now been rectified. I have just planted a Crab Apple John Downie which should pollinate the Jonagold

Well that’s better than nothing, and hopefully other customers have been saved from having the same problem.

I hope the John Downie does the job for you ... it’s certainly a fine crab apple producing larger fruits than many crab apples, particularly good for crab apple jelly. 😋
