Protecting Hostas from those nasty slugs

To protect my Hostas in containers I just put a band of copper tape under the rim and it works like a treat but in the ground is more of a problem. I’ve tried nearly everything but apart from going out every night and picking them off nothing seems to work.
Recently someone told me to try spraying the leaves with potassium bicarbonate just as the leaves start coming out in Feb. I’ve managed to get hold of some but would like to know if any else has heard about this.

I only have 3 planted in the border and chose varieties which are shown as slug resistant.  Only one summer in the ground but so far so good, virtually untouched.
