Can I prune this cactus?

I've had this cactus for quite a few years. It's grown very tall and spindly and I was wondering- if I was to cut the stems close to the root- would this kill the plant? Or would the stems regrow? It lives on my kitchen window sill.

Many thanks,
Sarah

Cutting the stems close to the root and standing in the brightest possible place would undoubtedly encourage new growth , but don't overwater .
    PS ; it isn't a cactus but a rather 'stretched-out' (etiolated) Kalanchoe blossfeldiana .
PPS ; may be a good idea to re-pot in fresh gritty compost .

I will do as you've advised. I did briefly wonder if it was a cactus before I posted 🙈
    Thanks again,

I would cut the top few inches off the stems with leaves and repot those in gritty compost too. They'll root up really quickly and give you a back up if the plant doesn't regrow from the main stem.
Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people
