overgrown fig tree

Any advice on how to tackle this overgrown fig tree, how and when to prune if possible.

Depending on where you are and how cold it gets I'd wait till late Feb/early March and then get in there with some big loppers and a pruning saw and prune it back to a good framework.  What shape that takes depends on whether you want it more or less rounded and shrub/tree shaped or a flatter, more espaliered form.

Looks to me like you have 4 or 5 good strong stems coming up from the centre and forming a vase shape so I'd leave those and clear everything else down to ground level.

Doing such a heavy prune will provoke plenty of new growth which will need tidying up later in summer to establish a decent shape.   Have a read of this info on figs from the RHS. Scroll down for the bit on pruning.
